In the case of a breastfeeding mom, it is important to understand the common positions most women use to nurse their babies. There are 4 positions routinely taught to new moms. The three seated positions are the Cradle Hold, the Cross Cradle Hold and the Football Hold. The fourth position, and the one used by most attachment parenting moms who co-sleep, is the Side Lying Hold. Each of the four positions - and most other positions used - place mom's head in an exaggerated anterior translation with forward flexion. Oftentimes, there is also a rotation or lateral flexion of the head as well.
